Sensei
The inaugural space (66 Kenmare Street / Nolita) opened in June 2006 with a seven week series of conceptual works assembled by Lisa Kirk of LEGION (legionnyc.com).
The artists featured during the LEGION at Sensei series included: Ricardo Valentim, Rose Kallal, KABOOM! Press, William McMillin, Robert Melee, Luis Agusto Leduc and two videos by Trevor Shimizu presented by Josh Kline.
August 2006 marked the debut of the Sensei Lab Series which specifically features the work of new and developing artists. In addition, the Lab series introduced experimental works by mid-career artists. And, these works were assembled by Joseph Latimore.
The Lab Series featured the following artists in 2006: Alam Tipu, Azikiwe Mohammed, Edy Ferguson, Charles Papillo, Bryan Schneider, Manuel Gomez, Sophie Churchill, Diane Naegal, Jeremy Parrigan. Liz Richardson, Alexis Kochanski, Karen Suroweic, Paula DiGoia, Constantine Gedal, Jason Fosco, Kacper Dolatowski, Ellis G, Joshua Wildman, J. Naughton, Amelia Geocos, Jason Campbell, Dennis Delgado, Summer McClinton, John Mobilio and Jordan Eagles.
Sensei was also the setting for a number of wonderful artist receptions and underground soirees featuring a talented lineup of djs, including: the world renowned A Touch of Class, Slaughton, Bruegito’s Way, Delikut, Scott Piscitelli, Azikiwe Mohammed, DJ Spun (RONG Music), DJ Tommy Moye (Blunted Funk) and the infamous Neon Kobra crew.
Sensei is now located at 34 East 1st Street in Manhattan's East Village. The space kicked off on March 16th, 2007 with a group show of selected works by August Goulet, Azikiwe Mohammed, Holly McWhorter and Edy Ferguson.
